My second trip to Maui, I rode on the back of Mike's motorcycle from Kahului to Ohe'o Gulch via highway 31.  At one point the road turned into what could've been mistaken for a narrow, dried stream bed with cliffs on either side; there were tour busses coming the opposite direction, cattle grates (meaning, of course, cattle as well), ruts, blind corners and large rocks.  I lived, but missed photo ops of the more perilous stretches as I was busy digging my fingers into Mike's chest.   Swimming at Ohe'o Gulch was great fun.

At my insistence, we also visited La Peruse Bay, the site of Haleakala's last lava flow, 200 years ago.  The place looks pretty bleak, but has some of the best snorkeling on the island:  They don't call it The Fishbowl for nothing.  Hiking on the sharp lava cost me a pair of boots.
